Oxford Housing Authority's Community Policing Program began in 1989 as a joint effort between the Authority and Oxford Police Department to rid our public housing communities of serious drugs and drug related crime problems. After OHA started our "clean-ups", we were fortunate enough to receive HUD Public Housing Drug Elimination Grants for 11 years. The Community Policing Program was so successful that the Oxford Police Department made the public housing police officers a division within the Department. Today, the Public Housing Division of the Oxford Police Department has three substations and six officers (seven officers counting our police dog Rex) assigned to our five public housing communities. Our Community Policing Program, under the leadership of Major Chuck Jenkins, has won awards and provided assistance to other Authorities interested in instituting a community policing program. Chief Stephen Bramlett of the Oxford Police Department is regularly quoted as saying that our public housing communities are among the safest communities in the City of Oxford.
